ST. LOUIS BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY

INSTRUCTION
ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND SECONDARY
Curriculum
Extra-Curricular Activities -- Intramural Programs

The Board of Education recognizes the value of well-organized intramural programs for students as an extension of the total curriculum. As such, they are to be considered supplementary school programs in physical education which are to be voluntary in nature and organized for the best interests of the students. Interschool participation, if any, is to be limited to St. Louis Public Schools.

As voluntary free-time programs, intramurals give students an opportunity to apply skills and the knowledge they have acquired in the instructional phase of physical education. This experience enhances the values inherent in team play, sportsmanship, and loyalty as well as provides for the refinement of skills.

ST. LOUIS BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULATION

INSTRUCTION
ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND SECONDARY
Curriculum
Extra-Curricular Activities -- Intramural Programs

As an integral part of each schools offerings, the intramural program comes under the authority of the principal just as in all other phases of the curriculum. When requested, the supervisors of physical education will provide assistance in preparing intramural budgets, selecting activities, and evaluating supervisory staff. The principal will annually appoint a qualified St. Louis Public Schools staff member as program coordinator.

The intramural program coordinator will be immediately responsible to the principal for planning and conducting the program. The coordinator must assure the principal that all intramural events are supervised by certificated personnel and that board regulations concerning extra-class activities are strictly followed.

The number and selection of intramural activities or events in each school will be determined by the principal in consultation with the intramural coordinator and when necessary, the supervisor(s) of physical education. In order to be included in the program, those activities that are not specifically covered in the physical education curriculum guide must satisfy the "Criteria for Selection of Activities" that appears in the introductory portion of the 1985 physical education curriculum guide.

Extra pay for the intramural coordinator and others administering intramural events will be determined in the same manner as for any teacher who might be expected to work beyond regular school hours.

Intramural Programs (continued) R6145.1

Intramural events will not be scheduled before the 11th day after the start of the school year. The intramural program shall be finished a week before the end of the school year. There will be no intramural activities during the winter or spring breaks. All intramural activities shall be finished no later than two (2) hours after the end of classes. In cases where the scheduling of facilities for several activities causes this provision to work a hardship, permission may be given by the appropriate associate superintendent to alter these provisions in the best interest of the students involved.

The student shall have an intramural activities participation certificate (signed by a physician, parent, and student) dated within ninety (90) days of the first day of participation, showing that he/she is physically able to participate in the intramural activities program of his/her school.
