Curriculum Design -- Recognition of Religious Beliefs and Customs

The Board of Education acknowledges the right to hold various religious beliefs accorded each person by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and the Missouri Constitution.

Such beliefs and/or customs may be described and discussed in classrooms at all grade levels but only for the purpose of encouraging recognition and respect. They may not be taught as doctrine or to instill belief.

Courses will not provide religious instruction. However, courses may teach about religion, including the Bible and other scripture, the history of religion, comparative religion, scripture as literature, and the role of religion in the history of the United States and other countries. Courses may also consider religious influences on art, music, literature, and social studies. Courses may also teach civic values and virtue, and the moral code that holds the community together. The fact that some of these values are also held by religions does not prevent their teaching.

The board also recognizes the right and responsibility of the home, church, and community in the teaching of religion and character formation.

Recognition of Religious Beliefs (continued) P6141.2

Courses may teach about religious holidays, including their religious aspects, and may celebrate the secular aspects of holidays. Courses may not, however, observe holidays as religious events or promote such observance by students.
