B. Flag Salute and Pledge of Allegiance Time should be taken to discuss what the flag and flag salute represent.
During school activities, those children who have objections will be excused from participating when the Salute to the Flag is given or Pledge of Allegiance is recited. C. Opening Exercises No activities shall be permitted that take on the character of religious devotions. Except as required by law, the board is neither prescribing opening exercises nor defining other portions of such exercises as they may be practiced by individual schools.
Holidays and special events may be observed in schools so long as such recognition respects the rights and feelings of all ethnic and racial segments of the population and is consistent with law. With respect to religious holidays, although schools may teach about such holidays and celebrate the secular aspects of the holiday, schools may not observe holidays as religious events or promote such observance by students. LOUIS BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULATION The custodian shall display the flag of the United States outside each school building during the hours school is in session and on legal school holidays, weather permitting. The flag shall be raised before the opening of school and taken down and stored securely at the close of the day. B. Flag Salute and Pledge of Allegiance The Salute to the Flag may be part of each day’s opening exercises, and of school assemblies and special events. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag shall be recited in at least one scheduled class of every pupil enrolled in each school at least once per week. Principals and teachers will excuse any student from participating who has religious or conscientious objections. C. Opening Exercises Principals shall instruct teachers to engage in no opening exercises and to have students engage in no exercises, that by word or deed possess a devotional or religious character. D. Holidays and Special Events Principals shall encourage the recognition of holidays and the commemoration of special events in the schools. The arts and customs from the various ethnic and racial segments of our local, state, national, and world communities shall be used to broaden students' awareness of significant contributions made to mankind and to our composite American culture. By the laws of this state, April 19th of every year is designated as Patriot’s Day designed to commemorate the beginning of the American Revolution. All teachers and students shall observe this day with appropriate exercises. F. Bill of Rights Day By the laws of this state, December 15th of every year is designated as the Bill of Rights Day. On this day, the Bill of Rights shall be read in each school and remembered with appropriate exercise. References Legal: Mo. Rev.
