Health Examination

All new permanent, probationary or substitute employees of the St. Louis Public School System and all employees rehired after an absence of one year or more, after an offer of employment has been made and prior to the commencement of the employment duties, shall be subject to a health examination certifying the employee to be free of a currently contagious disease or infection, the results of which are a condition of employment. Health examinations will be obtained from the district's designated health services agency at the district's expense or may be provided by the employee's own physician at the employee's expense. All such employees are subject to such an examination regardless of disability.

Information obtained regarding the medical condition or history of the employee is to be collected and maintained in separate medical files and is to be treated as a confidential medical record. Use of this information shall be limited to that prescribed by state and federal law.

School bus drivers and any employee of the transportation division who may drive a school bus, must pass a physical examination annually to determine whether such employee can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. This health examination shall be at the district's expense and each school bus drivers health certificate must be signed by the medical examiner designated by the Board of Education and shall be procured before the date established for bus run selection. The health certificate or proof thereof shall be provided to the Division of Human Resources.

Health Examination (continued) R4254

Nothing in the preceding paragraphs shall preclude the Board of Education from requiring an employee to obtain a health examination when it is believed that such examination or inquiry is job-related and consistent with business necessity.

In such cases the board shall reserve the right to require a physical examination of any employee by a doctor of its choice at its discretion and expense.
