BYLAWS OF THE BOARD
DUTIES OF OFFICERS, MEMBERS, EMPLOYEES AND AGENTS
Individual Members

Each member of the board, before assuming the duties of his or her office, shall take an oath before a circuit or associate circuit judge of the city, which oath shall be kept on record in the office of the board, that he or she possesses all the qualifications required by law, and that he or she will demean himself or herself faithfully in the office as a member of the Board of Education of the City of St. Louis.

The board has authority only when acting as a board legally in session. A board member can exercise authority only as a member of the board at official board meetings. The board shall not be bound by any statement or action by an individual board member except when such statement or action is in pursuance of specific instruction of the board.

No board member, by virtue of his or her office, shall exercise any administrative responsibility with respect to the schools or as an individual may command the services of any district employee.

Board members will notify the board president when they will be absent from meetings of the board and will notify committee chairpersons of their absence from committee meetings. The board members will provide the reasons for their absence.
